Pipo: If you look back at your career, when you started in music, what would you do differently as a front lead singer, that you did not have a chance to do that would make a big difference today to our musicians?
Cubano: I would advice for them to create a structure within the band, that would allow everyone to excel with more self confidence. Have regular meetings within the band to show mutual respect to each other and the importance of teamwork. I would also advice the current lead singers to learn an instrument, that will definitely help them in writing their own compositions. Have a good management team. Also, very important, when performing, whether there are 50 people or 1000 people to always give their best...100%.
Pipo: What do you think of our elder musicians, who never invested outside the industry in order to keep them financially stable if they decide not play music anymore, like other professionals do with their careers?
Cubano: International artists, had a better vision, they did not just live for the moment, they were looking for the future as well. They went to business school or they hired professional business people to help them plan for the future and to teach them. In Haiti, unfortunately our musicians did not see the importance of investment. Due to the fact, in Haiti society did not look up to musicians, it created an inferiority complex, that we never be somebody, therefore we were just enjoying the moment. The happiness and the money that they were generated, made them think it would last forever. They know that music is like oxygen, not like food, it would never get spoiled. Talent is God given, music has an effectthat would last forever, so the musicians thought they themselves would last forever, which was a grave mistake.
Pipo: If you were given a chance to live the life of another artist for 10 years, Haitian or non-Haitian, which artist(s) would that be?
Cubano: Reverend, Father Schmitt of the Catholic Seminary of Port de Paix.
Pipo: Who were your musical influence and at what age did you start in music?
Cubano: I started playing music at the age of 9. My influences are: Roger Maurasse, Aznavour, Pierre Blain, Guy Durosier, Les copains, Boulot Valcourt, Jo Lavaud, Dupervil, Rosenthal, Celia Cruz, Palmieri, Pete el Conde, Cheo Feliciano, James Brown, Carlo chanteur NJB, Marvin Gay, Richard Duroseau. Raymond Gaspard Boston, Nemours Jean Baptiste.
Pipo: What is your opinion of President Michel Martelly who was a musicians but many feel did not help create an environment to improve the industry?
Cubano: Come on my friend, you are trying to draw me into politics (LOL), not my business. I'll keep on singing...(LOL). Thank you so much for the questions. Best regards!
